First Grade News!
The first grade is beginning their fourth reading unit “Meeting Characters and Learning Lessons”. In this unit the first graders will be applying all they have learned about taking a “sneak peek” to improve their understanding of the text as well at getting an understanding of the story line. Students will be revisiting the text to make connections and to get to know the characters at a deeper level. The first graders are busy publishing their books for Young Author’s Day! They will be sharing their books with their first grade friends. They have worked hard writing, editing, and illustrating their books.
In mathematics students are learning a great deal about measurement. They have been participating in engaging activities to learn how to measure using nonstandard units. Students are also enhancing their math vocabulary by describing and comparing various sizes of items. The learning will continue with telling time. The children will be learning how to tell time using a digital as well as a standard analog clock. Ask your child what vocabulary they are learning to use during Math Talks.
In science, we are continuing with our sound and light unit. Students are learning how light impacts us not only in our daily life but in the habitat around us. We will also be investigating how the change in natural light impacts the plants and animals in our habitat. The first graders will be going to the Beardsley Zoo in April to learn more about animals. The first grade will also continue with the nature walks out on the trail. We are eager to see the changes Mother Nature has in store for us this month.
